Smirnoff Black vodka is a unique beverage that is created through a unique process of four-fold distillation and one-fold filtration. It is distilled three times in steel columns and then subjected to distillation in a more than 100-year-old copper distillation kettle, according to the traditional Russian method. This gives it a unique taste and aroma. Filtration removes impurities but does not deprive the vodka of its character. Distillation in copper kettles was discovered as early as the 16th century by the Dutch. They found that this type of method removed far more impurities than that carried out in clay and wooden barrels. Distillation in alembics was commonly used to produce Russian vodkas in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
